In a recent post update from Matt Cutts, head of Google’s Webspam team, we’ve been informed of “Another step to reward high-quality sites“. The idea behind this update (unofficially dubbed “Penguin“) is to further refine Google’s method of discerning what constitutes “web spam” – a raft of tricksy techniques used to artificially push a site up the rankings.

Google already has a list of quality guidelines, so if you’ve found some way around them then this latest update should close any remaining loopholes. Matt doesn’t go into specifics about how the new algorithm will weed out undesirables, and rightly so, as this would undermine all their hard work.

I remember the <del>good</del> old days when pasting a 500-word block of link text in the footer of a website was standard practice, and matching font and background colours was de rigueur. Once this became the norm, it was only a matter of time before it was ramped up to an industrial scale, and throughout the early noughties navigating Google search results to find the ‘real’ stuff was like trying to find a piece of hay in a haystack.

But now those days are (hopefully) coming to an end. With Google’s recent updates to the page layout algorithm and the overall Panda algorithm, the webspam team are zeroing in on link farms, duped content and the many nefarious techniques used by “black-hat” SEO wizards.

The headline “Giving People a Company Car is a Waste of Time” comes from a comment by Peter Cook, professor for automotive management at the University of Buckingham and well respected in the fleet sector.

His remarks in a recent Fleet News article are interesting because he goes on to say that “The vast majority of company car journeys are relatively short and relatively infrequent, and we simply cannot afford this luxury any more,” before talking about the growth of short term hire and car clubs as a far more flexible form of business mobility.

With electric vehicles making the headlines , flexible fleet solutions growing as a topic of conversation, fuel costs causing many fleet operators to scrutinise business travel closer than ever, and technology bringing greater acceptance to the business world for video conferencing, online presentations and conducting virtual meetings, the role of the contract hire companies, fleet management specialists and other fleet sector suppliers is to provide clients with a road map for future mobility within their organisations.

Marketing plays a vital role in this because the way in which fleet sector companies connect with their target market, and the messages they communicate, set the tone for their credentials to take their clients to the next level of business mobility.

An area where Halo is strong is being able to step back, offer strategic vision, and develop long-term campaigns that build a brand and act as a positioning statement for a business over time. To this end, we are excited about the coming years in fleet because never before has it been so important for companies to clarify where their strengths lie in helping companies move through what is certainly going to be a period of very significant change.

Halo recently had the pleasure of working with Poole-based public relations and events agency, Liz Lean PR Ltd to design and produce their new website. We met with self-proclaimed “Queen of Events” Chloe Parmiter to discuss their requirements and ensure that key aspects of the previous site were carried through to the new design. Their clients had already expressed a love for much of the simplicity and clarity of their online presence, so our brief was to build on that, as well as help develop new areas of interaction.

The site is built on the durable, scalable content management system WordPress, and utilises several dynamic plugins to spread content throughout the site, along with custom post types to handle extra content such as events, client and team member profiles.

You can visit the site over at www.lizleanpr.co.uk
